Subconjunctival emphysema.

چکیده
Subconjunctival emphysema is a condition that must theoretically exist in severe subcutaneous emphysema due to the laxity of the conjunctival tissues. However, this is generally obscured by associated periorbital emphysema and is hidden from view. We present documented evidence of subconjunctival emphysema in the absence of periorbital emphysema. A 53 year old man was admitted with a large right sided pneumothorax. He had suffered with chest disease since childhood and in 1959 a bronchogram showed predominantly right sided bronchiectasis. In 1967 he suffered a right sided pneumothorax requiring drainage with an intercostal drain. In 1968, 1979, and 1981 he had further right sided pneumothoraces each of which required surgical drainage, each episode resulted in the full expansion of the right lung. It was decided that a more definitive procedure be performed and he was referred for a right pleurectomy. Post-operatively he had an apical and basal chest drain. On the removal of the drains 6 d after operation he was noticed to have a right basal pneumothorax and it was decided to allow this to be absorbed. Two days later he complained of an abnormal swelling over his right globe and on examination this revealed free air beneath the conjunctival tissues of the eye. On further examination there was minimal subcutaneous emphysema over the right side of the chest and right cheek, in the absence of periorbital emphysema. He was treated with hypromellose 0.3% eye drops five times daily and the condition resolved over the next 5 days.

Subconjunctival emphysema due to trauma by compressed air tube.
An orbital fracture is a common complication of trauma to the eye. One of the classical signs of such a fracture is the presence of subconjunctival emphysema as a consequence of direct passage of air from the nasal sinuses to the orbit.' 2 We have treated a patient who suffered from subconjunctival emphysema after trauma due to direct penetration of compressed air to the orbit, without orbital ...
متن کاملSubconjunctival Emphysema After Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK)
DSAEK has recently evolved as a preferred method in place of PKP. After DSAEK, we experienced subconjunctival emphysema, decreased air bubble in the AC and low IOP. This could lead to complications, higher rate of dislocation or infection. We should control the wound closure with suture when in doubt.

An 18-year-old man presented with severe right eyeball pain after an accidental injury via a compressed air tube. Severe eyeball pain along with tearing and photophobia were noted immediately after the compressed air injury. Ophthalmic examinations showed conjunctival injections (Fig. 1) without obvious corneal wound, foreign materials or increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). Orbital computed...

A 16-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with the complaint of a sudden, painful left eye and proptosis after an episode of sneezing. A few hours earlier, he had sustained a blunt trauma to the left orbit as the result of a fistfight. The initial examination showed subcutaneous and subconjunctival emphysema. Visual acuity in the left eye was 20/30 (0.67), the pupils were reactive...
